People ask me, where do you work? What do you do? They expect a short answer but as you probably know it’s not that easy to explain. When you answer – I work with D365. You will see their faces staring at you trying to act like they know what you are talking about.
Then I always say:
Think of Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations as the brain and backbone of enterprise-level businesses. If a smaller business uses basic software like Excel (very small companies) or Business Central to manage its money, a global company with thousands of employees, complex supply chains, factories, and warehouses needs something massive. That’s where ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems like Microsoft D365 come in.
Microsoft used to sell it as a giant monolithic system known as Dynamics AX. These days, Microsoft breaks it down into modular, specialized cloud applications that seamlessly talk to each other. (PS. D365 meant to be called AX7)
List of D365 ERP applications
- Dynamics 365 Finance – This is the financial core. It handles everything from ledgers and budgets to AP/AR, international tax rules, and future fiscal projections.
- Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management – This acts as the functional engine. It oversees manufacturing processes, warehouse logistics, stock monitoring, purchasing, and the movement of goods.
- Dynamics 365 Commerce – This focuses on omnichannel retail. It bridges the gap between in-store POS terminals, digital storefronts, and internal inventory management systems.
- Dynamics 365 Human Resources – This streamlines the entire employee lifecycle, overseeing everything from initial onboarding and benefits packages to leave tracking and organizational hierarchies.
- Dynamics 365 Project Operations – Dynamics 365 Project Operations – This is tailored for service-centric firms like engineering or consulting. It manages the full project lifecycle, including resource scheduling, time logging, expense management, and complex client billing.
