D365 Applications – Supply Chain Management


In our series to go in-depth on the D365 F&O application, we have discussed the financial ledger engine – Dynamics 365 Finance. However, as any consultant or support analyst would tell you, no business transaction is possible without proper physical operations.

Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management (SCM)

If D365 Finance is the brain that monitors the money, then D365 SCM is the nervous system coordinating the physical logistics of raw materials, production lines, warehouse pickers, and delivery vehicles. Be it resolving hang-ups on your MRP run at night, setting up wave templates for newly created Depots, or monitoring shop floor jobs, this is the app where the operational rubber hits the road.

Core functions

Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management is built to handle complex, multi-site operational environments from high tech manufacturing to global retail distribution networks. Its capabilities rest on four fundamental operational pillars:

1. Near-Real-Time Planning & Resilient MRP

Traditional Material Requirements Planning (MRP) runs used to take hours overnight, locking databases and forcing planners to act on yesterday’s data. With the Planning Optimization Service, D365 SCM moves MRP calculations to an in-memory cloud service, completing complex planning runs in minutes. Planners can react to demand spikes or vendor delays in near-real time without impacting system performance.

2. Intelligent Warehouse & Logistics Fulfillment

From basic warehouses to highly automated large-scale distribution centers equipped with high-speed sorters and mobile scanners, D365 SCM helps you deliver enterprise logistics performance with full control over pick, pack, and ship processes. It includes advanced capabilities for optimizing cluster picking, wave processing, replenishment, and containerization, while providing logistics managers with total control over freight routing across carriers.

3. Mixed-Mode Manufacturing & Shop Floor Execution

Whatever type of production process your business uses, discrete assembly (machines), process (chemicals, drinks, formula and catch-weight), or lean (kanban pull), D365 SCM delivers native support for all three in one unified platform. Touchscreen dashboards on the factory floor let workers enter jobs, report scrap, see engineering drawings and more.

4. Proactive Asset & Sensor Intelligence

Unplanned downtime of machines cuts profits more than anything else. By leveraging the native Asset Management and Sensor Data Intelligence modules, D365 SCM allows you to connect to IoT sensors and track the vibration, temperature, and operating time of your machinery to shift from reactive to predictive maintenance.

To master D365 SCM, you need a complete picture of its individual modules and how they interact. Here is the detailed breakdown of the primary modules that comprise the app:

1. Product Information Management (PIM)

The central master data repository for all items, variants, bills of materials (BOMs), and product attributes.

Key Functions:

  • Released Products & Variants: Defines item master records, color/size/style dimensions, unit conversion rules, and tracking dimensions (serial/batch numbers).
  • Product Configuration: Configurator engine that lets sales teams build custom configurable products using rule-based constraint models.
  • Product Lifecycle States: Controls item readiness—restricting purchasing, selling, or production on items phasing out of active cycles.

2. Inventory Management

Tracks stock levels, inventory valuation, quality inspections, and warehouse movements across sites.

Key Functions:

  • Stock Movement & Journals: Manages inventory adjustments, movement journals, counting journals, and transfer orders between locations.
  • Quality Management: Automatically creates quality orders based on sampling rules during receipt, production, or picking to enforce strict quality control.
  • Inventory Visibility Add-in: A high-speed, microservice-based engine capable of handling millions of real-time inventory queries per minute across hyper-scale channels.

3. Procurement & Sourcing

Controls the full purchasing lifecycle from requisitioning raw materials to managing supplier performance.

Key Functions:

  • Purchase Orders & RFQs: Automates purchase requisitions, Requests for Quotations (RFQs), purchase orders, and multi-tier approval workflows.
  • Vendor Catalogs & Agreements: Enforces volume trade agreements, price discount rules, and procurement category structures.
  • Supply Risk Assessment: Evaluates historical vendor performance metrics (on-time/in-full delivery rates) to identify supply chain bottlenecks before they occur.

4. Master Planning

The brain that balances future customer demand against existing inventory and incoming supply commitments.

Key Functions:

  • MRP & Demand Driven MRP (DDMRP): Generates planned purchase orders, production orders, and transfer orders based on lead times and safety stock buffers.
  • Next-Gen Demand Planning App: Combines machine learning, external data signals, and historical sales trends to calculate accurate forecast models.

5. Production Control

Manages manufacturing execution, capacity planning, and shop floor operations.

Key Functions:

  • Production & Batch Orders: Schedules discrete jobs, process batch orders (formulas, co-products, and side-products), and lean Kanban boards.
  • Capacity & Resource Scheduling: Schedules human workers, tool sets, and machine centers based on finite capacity limits.
  • Production Floor Execution Interface: A simplified, touch-friendly tablet interface for shop-floor operators to clock in, view job steps, report output, and track scrap.

6. Warehouse Management (WMS)

Enterprise-grade warehouse operation execution for high-volume picking, packing, and stock control.

Key Functions:

  • Warehouse Mobile App: Directs warehouse staff through optimal routes for receiving, put-away, cycle counting, picking, and packing on rugged handheld devices.
  • Wave, Load, & Work Engine: Automatically groups sales orders into waves, builds loads, and generates step-by-step directed work instructions.
  • WMS-Only Mode: Enables you to run D365 WMS as a dedicated warehouse engine integrated via lightweight APIs with external legacy ERP systems.

7. Transportation Management (TMS)

Logistics planning for inbound procurement and outbound customer shipments across multiple transit modes.

Key Functions:

  • Rate Engine & Route Workbench: Compares carrier rates, selects optimal routes, and builds consolidated multi-stop truckloads.
  • Freight Reconciliation: Automatically matches carrier freight invoices against calculated internal freight estimates to prevent overbilling.

8. Asset Management

Comprehensive enterprise asset management (EAM) for plant machinery, tools, vehicles, and facilities.

Key Functions:

  • Maintenance Work Orders: Schedules corrective, preventative, and condition-based maintenance jobs.
  • Fault Management & Spare Parts: Tracks fault causes, symptom histories, and automatically reserves required spare parts from inventory.
  • Sensor Data Intelligence: Integrates IoT sensor streams directly into maintenance triggers.

9. Landed Cost

The Concept: Calculates the true “landed” cost of imported goods by tracking international shipping containers, customs duties, insurance, and port fees.

Key Functions:

  • Voyage Tracking: Tracks goods-in-transit across vessel voyages, customs clearance milestones, and shipping containers.
  • Cost Allocation: Allocates indirect freight, duty, and handling fees across individual product lines based on weight, volume, or monetary value.

10. Engineering Change Management (ECM)

Enforces formal revision control and change management governance across product lifecycles.

Key Functions:

  • Version Control: Tracks product versions, engineering BOM changes, and formula updates.
  • Engineering Change Requests (ECR) & Orders (ECO): Manages formal approval workflows, impact analysis, and controlled release of updated items to production plants.

11. Rebate Management

Centralized engine for complex sales pricing, promotional discounts, customer rebates, and vendor royalty deals.

Key Functions:

  • Omnichannel Price Engine: Handles tiered volume pricing, promotional bundles, and date-effective customer price matrices.
  • Rebate Calculations: Accrues, calculates, and posts financial claims for customer rebates and vendor growth incentives.

12. Cost Management

Evaluates inventory valuation, production variances, and cost flows across local GAAP and international accounting standards.

Key Functions:

  • Inventory Costing: Natively supports FIFO, LIFO, Weighted Average, Standard Costing, and Moving Average valuation methods.
  • Global Inventory Accounting Add-in: Allows multinational companies to perform inventory accounting simultaneously in multiple currencies and valuation rules (e.g., local statutory GAAP vs. IFRS).

The next generation of Supply Chain Management

The application of Microsoft Copilot and intelligent agents in D365 SCM has revolutionized the traditional approach to operations from simply recording to executing transactions with a level of precision that is beyond human capabilities.

Below are the key artificial intelligence functions implemented into the system.

  • Copilot for Purchase Order Changes & Supply Risks:

    When a change occurs in the delivery schedule or quantity of a vendor, the Copilot analyzes the affected downstream purchase orders, production jobs, and sales orders. It will then identify the impact on the processes and provide explanations in natural language, and suggest any appropriate action or emails to the suppliers.

  • AI-Powered Forecast:

    The Demand Planning app uses machine learning models to generate statistical forecasts while providing full transparency as to why the forecast changed, highlighting seasonality, promotions, and other relevant factors in natural language.

  • Natural Language Page Summaries:

    It provides contextual summaries of open work in supply chain management (SCM) and related disciplines (e.g., summarizing open warehouse work, purchase order lines, or delayed shipments) depending on the user’s role and permissions in real-time and situational awareness.

  • Sensor-Driven Predictive Maintenance:

    Machine learning algorithms continuously analyze IoT sensor streams (temperature, vibration, power draw) from factory equipment to detect anomalies and auto-generate maintenance work orders before catastrophic failure occurs.

  • Autonomous Order Management Agents:

    AI agents monitor incoming customer order streams, automatically identify fulfillment delays or inventory shortages, and re-route orders to alternate fulfillment centers based on optimized cost-to-deliver logic.

Operations Are Where the System Lives

If D365 Finance is where business results are recorded, D365 SCM is where business value is created.

As support analysts and functional consultants, the biggest challenges we face in SCM are not ensuring that a particular transaction has been posted but rather making sure that there is a correct representation of a particular business process in the ERP system. Being able to handle and resolve these challenges by relying on your understanding of SCM modules and the latest innovations within them will ensure not only that particular work is done but that the production lines and supply chains are not stalled and the business’s customers can be satisfied.
